Sutherland House Hotel is named after George Sutherland, who came to Chile in 1861, from the "Moray House Training College" in Edinburgh, Scotland Peter Mackay to assist in the "Artizan College" in the task of educating the children of British families who worked in Valparaiso.

Subsequently, both educators and the painter Thomas Somerscales are separated by religious differences of that school, beginning in 1877, "Mackay and Sutherland School."Educational society "Mackay & Sutherland" in 1882 bought the Bank of Valparaiso land where the present Hotel Boutique Sutherland House.

This is a typical English style mansion, built in 1870 which served as rectory to the establishment. In 1893, George Sutherland acquired the rights to the property as sole owner.

On the death of Mackay, Sutherland and the new Professor George Robertson decided to rename the school as "The Mackay Español School" as a posthumous tribute.

Currently, beside the main entrance to the headquarters of "The Mackay School" in Reñaca, Viña del Mar, you can see the busts of three persons of great importance for the development of that institution. These are Professors Peter Mackay, George Sutherland and George Robertson.
